- Company History
We’re an outdoor lifestyle store with a proud history of providing quality camping and outdoor equipment for the Australian market.
Established in 1949, we are one of the oldest camping and outdoor retailers in the country. We have a depth of expertise that’s rare in today’s world of big box retail stores and online shops.
We started as a family-owned and operated business. Our first store was on Parramatta Road in Camperdown in Sydney’s inner west. Today, we have six stores and an active online business offering outdoor-related products for camping, hiking, kayaking, trekking, travelling, boating, fishing, picnicking or outdoor entertaining in the backyard.
Our stores are large in scale and range. We stock Australia's biggest range of tents and are proud to be able to display our products and advise our customers on the styles and designs.
Exclusive product ranges
Kangaroo Tent City has exclusive product ranges in safari tents, dome tents, family canvas tents, kayaks, swags, camper trailers, sleeping bags, jackets, mattresses, camping furniture and more. We also stock leading national and international brands in the camping and outdoor industry.
Our philosophy is to promote and sell equipment that can be trusted to work. That’s why we only deal with the premium brand names, and products that have been tried and tested.
Take the time to visit our stores. We’ll help you select the outdoor equipment that’s right for you.
Kangaroo Tent City custom-manufactured tents at Cockatoo Island, Sydney Harbour
We’re not just retailers. Throughout our history we’ve designed and manufactured outdoor shelters and amassed an enormous amount of knowledge around design, construction and materials.
We have designers, repairers and retail experts. Our advice is actively sought throughout the outdoor industry. We are also trusted providers of outdoor shelters for scouting groups, government departments, tourism companies and individuals throughout Australia.
We’ve seen a lot of changes in outdoor products and we’ve also been innovators of change. For example, we introduced one of the first ‘tents on wheels’, the Kangaroo Camper.
While our Australian manufacturing has reduced in scale, we still maintain a workshop for undertaking alterations and for producing custom products including: the 5-star Zoofari tents at Taronga Western Plains Zoo, canvas awnings, marquees and protective covers of all shapes and sizes for musical instruments, TV cameras, machinery and more.
Customer Service and Buying Power
We’re small enough to offer flexibility and service, yet large enough to tap into great buying power so we can offer low prices every day on a large range of outdoor products.

‘Do It Outdoors’ is our slogan. We love outdoor living. We love getting people outside to explore and to share outdoor experiences.
The outdoor lifestyle we promote is not just for adventurers. We cater for all ages and personalities: for people who enjoy walking in the park, having a backyard barbecue, taking the children to the beach, hitting the road in a camper trailer, or simply sitting quietly in a comfy outdoor lounge with a good book. We have the products and knowhow to help you experience these wonderful moments.
We don’t want new developments in technology to take away from the joys of running through a shallow creek bed, smelling an open campfire, paddling a kayak on a glassy river at sunrise …
We like to think we are encouraging a lifestyle choice that will create magical memories to last a lifetime.

Kangaroo Tent City was established in Sydney as a manufacturer of canvas products in 1949. We were the first frame-tent manufacturer in Australia. We also made marquees, tarpaulins, flies and other canvas products, and undertook alteration work and repairs.
Our canvas goods were produced under the direct supervision of well-known canvas specialist, Mr R Tierney.
Our first retail store was a three-storey building in Parramatta Road in Camperdown in Sydney’s inner west. We focused on European and Australian-made tents, and Australian-made camping furniture. As the business became well established, we began importing a large range of camping-related items including Coleman coolers and lanterns, and camping furniture.
In the late 1970s the business moved to the corner of Mallet St and Parramatta Rd in Camperdown where it remained for almost 30 years. By then, Kangaroo Tent City had established itself as Sydney's premier camping retailer and was the largest camping retailer of camping products in NSW.
Kangaroo Tent City supplied tents and equipment to customers from all around Australia, as well as supplying government departments and the Australian Defence Forces.
In 1980, Kangaroo Tent City introduced one of the first ‘Tents on Wheels’, known as the Kangaroo Camper.
We opened a second store in Mayfield near Newcastle in the early 80s that we sold later in the decade.
In 1990, we became Kangaroo Tent City and BBQs as we began selling a range of barbecues and backyard furniture.
In 1991, we opened a store in Penrith to cater for greater western Sydney. The store, over two levels with approximately 1500sqm of showroom space, boasted the largest tent display in greater western Sydney. The store operated from these premises for 20 years.
In 1995, we opened in Tuggerah to serve the developing community and new suburbs on the Central Coast. The store quickly became the preferred camping and outdoor store for the region.
In November 2001, we opened in Chatswood on Sydney's north shore. The store had about 750sqm of showroom space and focused on camping and barbecue products. It housed the largest tent display on the north shore.
In December 2003, we relocated the head office store to premises with 1700sqm of showroom at to the corner of Church and Seville Streets in Parramatta.
In August 2007, we opened a store in Maitland to serve customers from Newcastle and the Hunter Valley.
In September 2010, we opened an exciting new store at Caringbah to serve the Sutherland Shire in Sydney’s south. The store had 1400sqm of showroom with a large display of tents, barbecues, outdoor furniture, kayaks and camper trailers.
November 2010 was a sad time in our company history with our Penrith store burning to the ground. After 20 years in this location, everything was lost as fire engulfed the entire building and the buildings on either side. No one was hurt but the fire caused chaos in the lead up to Christmas. The dedicated Kangaroo Tent City team rallied to ensure customers’ orders were fulfilled.
In October 2011, we opened the Warrawong store to cater for the camping and outdoor needs of customers in the Illawarra and southern NSW. The store is in the prime King Street shopping and has the largest tent display in the region.
In October 2014, we moved our head office and warehouse to bigger and better facilities in Arndell Park in greater western Sydney. We relocated the North Parramatta store to Castle Hill to better cater for the population of northwest Sydney.
Kangaroo Tent City and BBQs is still a family-owned Australian business with family values at its core. We remain loyal to our core values of placing customer needs first by providing decent quality products at the right price. Over our 68-year history, we have maintained our values and traditions in an ever-changing and challenging retail environment.
We have customers who have been shopping at Kangaroo Tent City for more than 20 years and who still visit our stores today. We hear comments like: “I purchased my first tent from here 25 years ago and I still have it today.” It brings a smile to our faces when we recognise customers who continue to shop at Kangaroo Tent City for all their camping and outdoor products after all these years.
Kangaroo Tent City and BBQs have a wonderful team of staff who are proud of the company's heritage and traditions.
