Kangaroo Tent City & BBQ's is one of the largest retailers of camping and outdoor products in NSW and have been retailers and manufacturers of tents, camper trailers and canvas products since 1949.

With approximately 30 tents on display in each store, you will find one of the biggest ranges of dome tents and canvas tents to choose from. Some of these tents have features designed exclusively for Kangaroo Tent City and our massive range allows us to offer these tents at warehouse prices. Our extensive knowledge of tents and canvas manufacturing is well known and trusted throughout the Outdoor Industry.

Our manufacturing and repairs service is located at North Parramatta. Here we handle clients' tent repairs, repairs for a number of wholesalers in the industry and we will make anything out of canvas, vinyl, or polyweave fabric to our clients needs in consultation with our manufacturing experts. These items include tents, awnings, BBQ covers, canvas bags, marquees, waterproof covers, alterations, etc.

Having a repair service on site gives Kangaroo Tent City a major advantage over other retailers. Clients feel at ease when they realise they can get after sales service and spare parts from us directly, without dealing with any middle-man.

Each of our stores has 2 floors displaying a massive range of items including sleeping bags, back packs, mattresses, gas stoves and lanterns, swags, footwear, tents, BBQ's, outdoor furniture, rainwear and outdoor clothing, market umbrellas, inflatable boats, tarpaulins, gazebos, hammocks, maps and books, and other camping accessories.

Our North Parramatta Store is the largest, with 2 floors of products on display making it one of the largest outdoor stores in NSW.

In 1996 and 1999 Kangaroo Tent City and BBQ's was awarded 'Camping Retailer of the Year' by the Caravan and Camping Industry Association of NSW.  Kangaroo Tent City has also taken out the major awars at the Caravan, Camping, 4WD and Holiday Supershow at Rosehill Racecourse - Best Overall Display 2004, Best Camping Display 2004, 2007, 2008 and 2011.

Company History   

Kangaroo Tent City was established in Sydney as a manufacturer of canvas products in 1949. The original business was at Camperdown - a three storey building still in existence today, focussing on both European and Australian made tents, and Australian made camping furniture. Kangaroo Tent City was the first frame tent manufacturer in Australia. Producing items such as marquees, tarps, flys and any other canvas manufacturing or alteration work as required.

All types of canvas goods were made under the direct supervision of well-known canvas specialist at the time, Mr R Tierney. The business became well established and began importing a large range of camping related items such as European made canvas tents, Coleman coolers and lanterns, and camping furniture.

In the late 1970's the business moved premises to the corner of Mallet St and Parramatta Rd Camperdown and remained at this location for almost 30 years. By this time Kangaroo Tent City had established itself as Sydney's premiere camping retailer and was the largest retailer of camping products in NSW. Tents and equipment were supplied to clients from all around Australia, as well as supplying government departments and the Australian Defence Forces.  In the early 1980's a second store was opened in Mayfield near Newcastle. The Newcastle store was sold in the late 1980's.  For the next 5 years the single store operation remained at Camperdown in Sydneys inner west.

In 1991 a new store was opened at Penrith to cater for Sydney's greater west.  In 1995, a third store was opened, this time in Tuggerah on the Central Coast. A fourth store was opened at Chatswood on Sydney's North Shore in November 2001.  On December 21st, 2003 the head office store at Camperdown, which had been in this location for 30 years, was closed down and relocated to a new location at the corner of Church & Seville Streets, North Parramatta.  In August 2007 Kangaroo Tent City at Maitland was opened to serve the customers of Newcastle and the Hunter Valley.  In September 2010, an exciting new store at Caringbah was opened to serve the needs of the Sutherland Shire in Sydneys South.

In one of the sadest events of the company's history, the Penrith store burnt to the ground in an unfortunate fire on 2nd November 2010.  After 20 years in this location, everything was lost overnight in a horrible fire that engulfed the whole building and buildings either side.  Thankfully no one was hurt, but there was nothing left to salvage.  This event naturally caused turmoil to the business operations in the lead up to Christmas, however Kangaroo Tent City and BBQs recovered as quickly as possible, to ensure customer needs were fulfilled.

In October 2011, Kangaroo Tent City opened another new store at Warrawong to cater for the camping and outdoor needs of the Illawarra region and customers from Southern NSW.

Today Kangaroo Tent City and BBQS is a family owned Australian business.  We have held our market position, values, traditions, and heritage in an ever changing and challenging retail environment, over a history of 60 years.  The retail world of today is a dynamic and changing landscape, where on line retailing and major retail chain stores are dominant, where consumers are seeing less of a focus on service and expertise.  In holding true to our traditions of quality gear and knowledgeable service, the Kangaroo Tent City and BBQs brand has managed to maintain its store operations, and establish itself as a market leader in online retailing of camping and outdoor equipment, supplying equipment to clients from all corners of Australia.  With 6 stores operating in greater Sydney and NSW and a strong online operation, Kangaroo Tent City has become the largest independent retailer of premium brand name camping and outdoor gear in NSW.

Over the years the products at Kangaroo Tent City may have changed but the philosophies have remained the same - Genuine people, genuine brands, genuine prices.  Not too many gimmicks, just great quality gear at every day low prices.

Many clients who have been shopping at Kangaroo Tent City for 20 years or more are still visiting the stores today. Comments such as, 'I purchased my first tent from here 25 years ago and I still have it today', are often heard.  It brings a smile to our faces when we recognise our regular clients who still choose to shop at Kangaroo Tent City for all their camping and outdoor products after all these years.

Change of Mind

Please choose carefully as refunds are not normally provided where you have simply changed your mind, made a wrong selection or simply found the item cheaper elsewhere. We recommend you carefully preview any orders before adding them to your shopping cart and proceeding with your order.

Goods Damaged in Transit

If any goods arrive damaged, please contact us within 5 working days or receiving the goods.  Claims after 5 working days of receiving the goods will not be accepted.  Our team will arrange to have the damaged item returned to us and either replace the product or refund the price to you.  Damaged goods must be returned to us in the condition received by you with all original packaging and copies of receipts provided with the goods showing proof of purchase to the original purchaser.

Consumer Guarantees

Under the Competition and Consumer Act 2010 and under other consumer laws applying in each State and Territory, you have the right to have goods replaced, repaired or to receive a refund where:

§the goods are faulty;

§the goods are wrongly described;

§the goods are different from a sample shown to you; and/or

§the goods do not do what they are supposed to do.

These consumer guarantees are implied into all consumer contracts and cannot be excluded, restricted or modified. These are in addition to any voluntary warranties offered by a manufacturer.

Any shipping costs to return the original product to us will be at our cost, where we consider the goods to have breached a consumer guarantee.  If on examination of goods returned to us we find that the goods not to be in breach of the consumer guarantees, we may charge you a fee for our time and expertise in examining the goods, and any cost to return the goods to you.

Please note that goods must be returned within a reasonable period and you may be asked to demonstrate that the problem with the goods was not your fault.

Consumer Guarantees do not apply where in our reasonable opinion the goods became unacceptable due to fair wear and tear, or by a customer’s misuse, failure to use the goods in accordance with manufacturer's instructions, or failure to take reasonable care.

Refunds

Refunds will be issued by us or via PayPal, as applicable. Refunds will normally be processed within 7 days.
